The Design Architecture Strategy Walled Garden House

The design strategy for this mews dwelling, is to create an alternative typology for the dual occupancy densification of inner suburban dwellings. The red brick garden wall of primary dwelling, wrapped around the original urban blocks to form new walled garden. The house is made from materials found in the brick and copper.

The house is then formed within this walled garden. The ground floor accommodation, of living area, study, the bedroom and bathroom is placed hard against the street within the brick walled enclosure, shielding the inner southerly courtyard.

Once within the house, the south and west facing glazed inner elevations open to the enclosed inner courtyard. Above, the first floor accommodation is enclosed in a recessed copper enclosure, aligning with the inner terrace, comprising; the master bedroom, en-suite and single bedroom.

The volume of the top, re-orient to the street, is the culmination of the architectural promenade, large windows provide views of an escape to the outside world, it is a common scale, in contrast with personal space below. Down the stairs one crosses from public to private, one city at a glance outside before entering into the personal intimacy of the living area below.
